중동을 기반으로 한 연합선사인 UASC(United Arab Shipping Company)가 창사 이후 최대 규모의 투자를 통해 건조중인 17척의 초대형 컨테이너선 중 첫 1만8천800TEU급의 컨테이너선박 인도를 눈 앞에 두고 있다.

UASC 한국 총대리점인 연합해운 박태원 사장(사진)은 7일 해양수산부 출입기자단 간담회를 통해 이같이 밝히고 "지난해 11월 27일 이미 현대중공업에 발주한 17척의 초대형 컨테이너선 중 첫 1만5천TEU MV “Sajir”를 인수 하고, 나머지 선박들도 계속적으로 현대중공업 및 현대삼호중공업에서 건조를 진행 중"이라고 말했다.

그는 또 이번 달 4월 29일 목포 현대삼호중공업에서 예정되어 있는 첫 1만8천800TEU급의 MV “Barzan”의 명명식에는 UASC 이사회 이사진들, 최고경영진들, 신조선 팀 및 기술 팀, 기타 본사임원들, 마지막으로 대형화주와 언론관계자 등 150여명을 초청, 행사를 치러질 예정이라고 밝혔다. 이와 관련하여, 박 사장은 명명식에 대해 “총 수주 금액만 20억 달러가 넘는 창사 이래 최대 규모의 선박 발주로 UASC는 이들 선박을 모두 인수 및 선대 개편이 완료되면 글로벌 상위 10위권에 근접하게 될 것"이라면서 "이선박은 LNG로 연료변환이 가능하도록 건조된 선박이기 때문에 연료 절감 효과로 인한 원가경쟁력뿐 아니라, 친환경 운항을 지향하는 선사로서의 입지를 다질 수 있을 것 입니다. 예를 들면, 자체 모든 선박에 Energy Efficiency Certificate with documented EEDI를 발급 받을 예정"이라고 말했다.

이러한 공격적인 신조 발주로 인하여 UASC는 현재 CMA-CGM, CSCL(China Shipping Container Line)와 함께 ‘오션스리(Ocean Three)’ 얼라이언스를 구축하였으며, 독일 함부루크수드(Hamburg Sud)와 선복량 공유 계약을 체결함으로써 오는 7월에는 그 동안 진출하지 못했던 남미지역 항로에 대한 서비스도 제공할 예정이다.

이와 관련하여, 박태원 사장은 “새로운 얼라이언스 구축 및 선복 공유 계약으로 인하여 늘어나는 서비스 및 선복을 가지고 본사는 한국 내에서의 UASC 서비스의 시장점유율 확대에 나서고 있으며, 그렇기 때문에 연합해운의 영업력이 더 절실한 상태”라면서도 “제 자신이 지난 40년간 UASC 서비스를 시장에 알리며 본사와 일심동체처럼 화물 유치를 해왔으며, 본사는 저에게 앞으로도 더 나은 UASC 서비스로 한결같은 한국에서의 대화주 영업을 해주길 원하고 있다.”고 말했다. 영문 기사보도 내용은 다음과 같다.

United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) is a global shipping company based in the Middle East.  UASC has completed its largest ever newbuilding order of its 17 new vessels.  The first of the 18,000 TEU vessel is about to be delivered.

Out of the 17 ships order placed with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HII) last November, the first 15,000 TEU MV “Sajir” was already delivered and the rest are still under building.

At this month’s naming ceremony of its first 18,000 TEU MV “Barzan”, on the 29th at Mokpo’s Kummho Heavy Industries, the Board of UASC, CEOs, New Ships team, Operations, other HQ executive Board members along with large shippers as well as media, a large 150 plus people are expected to attend.  In regards to the naming ceremony, UASC’s Korea agency president, Mr. Taewon Park remarks, “with the total order amount being over 2 billion dollars, it is the largest investment of UASC to date and with the completion of all ships and realignment of fleets, UASC will be in the top 10 of global shipping industry.”

Also, Mr. Park mentions, “ with all the ships being built to be able to convert fuel to LNG, not only will it conserve fuel but will be able to cut back on costs as well as become a leader in positioning ourselves as an environmental friendly shipper. For example, we are preparing to get issued the Energy Efficiency Certificate with documented EEDI for all ships.”

Along with it’s aggressive order of new ships, UASC is currently joined in the ‘Ocean Three’ alliance with CMA-CGM and CSCL (China Shipping Container Line) and along with Germany’s Hamburg Sud, concluded a contract to share loading space, and starting July, will venture out to the South American course that they have not yet ventured out to.
